Diezani’s $40m Jewellery: Court sets Date to Hear Final Forfeiture

The date for the case related to the final forfeiture of the $40 million jewellery of the former minister of petroleum resources, Diezani Allison-Madueke, has been fixed by the Federal High Court in Lagos as Monday, September 2. Justice Nicholas Oweibo, who presided over the case on Thursday, August 28,2019 adjourned the hearing following an application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Channels TV reports.

The EFCC at a federal court in Lagos on July 5, secured an interim forfeiture of hundreds of jewellery valued at $40 million allegedly belonging to Alison-Madueke.

Rotimi Oyedepo who is EFCC’s lawyer said “An adjournment will ensure that all responses to the application can be entertained at the same time by the court and necessary ruling delivered.”  Oyedepo informed the court that he will need adequate to respond to a counter-affidavit filed by the defense, a request which even Diezani’s counsel agreed to.

On the other hand, Diezani had accused the EFCC of violating her privacy by entering her apartment without a court order. Diezani said in an application through her lawyer that the action of the anti-graft agency operatives was illegal.
